Before beginning this training, it is important that all participants read and understand OSHA’s standards for powered industrial trucks (29 CFR 1910.178). It is also important that you have your employer’s permission to take part in this training.
The course includes:
• Overview of safety regulations for forklifts.
• Pre-operational checks.
• Operation of various types of powered industrial trucks.
• Basic maneuvering techniques in tight spaces or on inclines/declines.
• Loading and unloading techniques, proper attachment of loads, and determining center of gravity.
• Safe transportation techniques, proper turning, braking, shifting, and emergency stops.
• How to shut down a forklift safely at the end of a shift.
• Information about other safety issues related to operating a forklift including common distractions such as talking or texting while operating, fatigue management while operating, proper seatbelt use while operating, and other risk management topics.
At the completion of this training program you will be able to:
• Understand and comply with OSHA standards related to powered industrial trucks operations;
• Safely inspect equipment before operation;
• Demonstrate an understanding of various lift truck controls;
• Properly operate lift trucks with regard for load size/shape and height requirements;
• Demonstrate safe driving habits around obstacles and pedestrian traffic;
• Use approved loading procedures for picking up or placing down a load; • Determine appropriate stopping distances on different surfaces; • Demonstrate safe backing-up practices on various terrain surfaces; • Know when to shut down equipment according to procedure.

Forklift Standards
1. Operators must be certified and competent in the operation of a forklift and its attachment.
2. Only approved personnel are allowed to operate a forklift, with approval granted by the site safety officer or authorized supervisor.
3. A complete daily pre-operational inspection should be conducted on the forklift and its attachments prior to each use.
4. Only authorized persons are permitted to make repairs and modifications to any equipment operated on company property, with approval from the maintenance supervisor.
5. Forklifts should never be operated while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as determined by reasonable suspicion standards set by the organization’s Drug & Alcohol Program Coordinator (DAPC).
6. Maximum weight limits must be adhered to at all times during loading, transporting, and unloading of goods onto a forklift.
7. Only trained personnel should enter restricted areas such as loading docks, freight yards, construction sites or hazardous locations with an operational forklift present or operating within those areas at that time.
8. Proper protective gear should always be worn when operating a forklift such as eye protection and non-skid safety shoes or boots.
9. Always check for nearby workers and obstructions before reversing direction of a forklift to ensure a safe working environment for all employees around it at any given time .
10 Forklifts must travel at walking speed (1-3 mph) when people are nearby and on footpaths or corridors designed for pedestrian traffic
